Cloudpost was banned in pauper on September 16, 2013. Powerful decks in Pauper combine Cloudpost with the "free spell mechanic" to generate a lot of mana. Without much downside, Cloudpost accelerates mana and provides a single land that taps for multiple mana, converting "free spells" into mana generators. Cloudpost was banned in modern on September 20, 2011. The threat of facing decks which could generate fifteen or more mana each turn starting on turn four kept a lot of different decks out of the tournament, greatly reducing the diversity. There are alternatives for people who wish to play mana-ramp decks, but they do not appear to be as crushing.
